What Instructors Expect from Online Students

Online EducationIf you’re thinking about getting a college degree online, you may be unsure about how you’ll perform in a virtual school setting. It’s a legitimate concern. Although you’re probably comfortable surfing the Web, shopping online and even working over the Internet, going to an online school is probably still a foreign, untested experience.

And let’s be honest … online learning is different from going to a traditional brick-and-mortar school. There are usually no set class times. You have to set and then keep your own schedule. With no classrooms, dormitories or study halls to retreat to, you have to find a place at home, work or public setting (like a library) where you can study without distraction. You can form study groups with fellow students, but they have to be online. Tests? Yes, once again, they’re done over the Internet.

One way to prepare yourself to succeed as an online student is to know in advance what your instructors will expect from you. By meeting or exceeding these expectations, you should be able to enjoy a productive and rewarding educational experience, and even have some fun doing so!

Here are the basic standards most online college instructors set for their students:

1. Regular Attendance. Once you set your class schedule, it’s critical you stick to it. Missing or even postponing classes will not only put you behind the class, but also it tells your instructor you’re less than fully committed to your education.

2. Participation. It’s not enough just to attend your online classes — you really need to be there. Even in an online environment, you’ll have plenty of chances to ask questions, challenge the instructor and otherwise contribute to the discussion. Make your presence known. By acting engaged, you’ll find you’ll actually become engaged, which will improve your overall performance.

3. Punctuality and Promptness. When you have an appointment to make a live online connection, be on time. This same goes for submitting papers and taking tests. Try to never miss a deadline.

4. Be a Joiner. As an online student, it’s easy for you to make the minimum effort — just going to classes, doing your homework and taking your tests, but little else. That’s not getting the most of your online college experience. And it won’t get you noticed by your instructors. Instead, seek out or actively form study groups with fellow students. If other extracurricular activities (clubs, volunteer positions, etc.) are offered, take advantage. Try them out. Extracurricular experience can not only help support your online studies, but it can often be helpful in future job hunts.

5. Communicate. Never be a wallflower. Stay in regular contact with your instructors. Ask questions. Make comments. Offer suggestions. Remember, online education can feel just as disconnected for instructors as it can for students, so they’ll appreciate frequent human contact.

In short, use the powers of the Internet to make yourself known, stay in touch and be part of the conversation. If you have experience with Facebook, Pinterest or other social networks, this concept should be a familiar one!
