New Study Confirms the Value of a College Degree

Value of a College DegreeYou’ve probably read many stories about how college degrees can increase your earning power. Well, here comes another one. The report is titled “The Economic Benefits of Post Secondary Degrees.” It’s from the association of State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO), a 58-year-old group that helps educators set policy at the state and local levels.

The report looks at how much money college graduates earn in all 50 states in seven general subject areas. The subjects are:

  • Arts and Humanities
  • Business and Communications
  • Education
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
  • Health
  • Trades

Here’s how the report breaks down annual income as a function of education:

  • Nationwide, American high school graduates earn an average $29,423 per year.
  • Associate degree holders earn an average $38,607 per year.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders earn an average $50,360 per year.
  • Master’s degree holders earn an average $68,064 per year.

Among the seven disciplines studied, graduates in the health care field tended to earn the most while those in the trade category earned the least.

“This study digs beneath the anecdotes to give an in-depth look at the financial returns to graduates by discipline and among the states. The more deeply and completely one examines the evidence, the more compelling the conclusion — higher education is a great investment for both the student and society as a whole, no matter where you live, no matter what you study,” said SHEEO President Paul Ligenfelter.
