90% of Passwords Vulnerable to Hackers, Report Says

Computer PasswordThink your eight-character computer passwords are safe? It probably isn’t, according to a recent report on password safety from Deloitte, the global business consultant and accounting firm.* In fact, skilled hackers easily break about 90 percent of passwords, the report says, leaving individuals and businesses vulnerable to billions of dollars in combined damage and losses.

Joylon Barker, who heads Deloitte’s technology, media and telecommunications division, explained that many people use simple passwords that are easy to guess (“Password” is America’s favorite password, according to a recent survey), or complex, multi-character passwords that are often difficult to remember. When people forget their passwords, they usually request a temporary one — a move a skilled hacker can duplicate from any remote location.

Deloitte recommends that businesses wanting to protect their technology from off-site hackers use “two-factor authentication” in place of conventional passwords. Two-factor authentication sends a one-time-only password to a physical device such as a smartphone, making it difficult to intercept or duplicate.
