4. Your Professionalism. This is key to getting your first job — and any job thereafter. How do you demonstrate professionalism during an interview? Here are the basics:
- Arrive for your interview on time
- Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake and look him/her straight in the eye
- Be properly dressed and groomed
- Be confident, but don’t oversell yourself
- Answer the questions posed to you honestly and completely; if you don’t know something, say so
- After the interview, send your interview a thank you email or, better yet, a handwritten thank you note.
5. Your Knowledge of the Company. This is where a lot of job candidates come up short — they don’t really know or understand the company they’re asking to join! To really impress an interviewer, spend an hour or two on the Internet before you visit a company. Read every page of their website. Use a search engine like Google, Bing or Yahoo to find any articles or news items about them. Then use your knowledge to ask pointed questions about the company’s current needs and the value you can bring to the organization.
