A College Degree is Still a Great Investment, Study Says

College CostsCollege costs have skyrocketed over the past three decades, but the benefits of having a bachelor’s degree more than make up the difference, according to a new report from the Hamilton Project, part of the Washington-based Brookings Institution.

Released in early October, the Hamilton Project report titled “Regardless of the Cost, College Still Matters” reported the following:

• Nationwide, college tuition has increased by almost 50 percent in the last 20 years.

• Rising tuition costs have been more than offset by the increased earnings premium for college graduates.

• In the 1980s, recent college graduates earned about $4,000 more per year than peers with just a high school diploma. Over 30 years, that figure has climbed to about $12,000 per year. (All figures adjusted for inflation.)

• Today, a college graduate is almost 20 percent more likely to be employed than someone who just has a high school diploma. This is largest “employment gap” between college and high school graduates in the nation’s history.

• In 1980, having a bachelor’s degree would likely earn you an additional $260,000 over your working lifetime. For someone who started college in 2010, the bachelor’s degree lifetime bonus is estimated to be $450,000.

The report’s authors sum up their conclusions this way: “The cost of college is growing, but the benefits of college — and, by extension, the cost of not going to college — are growing even faster.”
