5 Ways Technology is Changing Education

Online EducationTechnology is quickly changing the way we teach and learn. Computers and the Internet are making their way into every aspect of education. By the end of this decade, classrooms as we have known them for decades may be all but extinct.

Here are five technologies that are changing the face of education:

1. Digital Search Engines — The Internet — and especially search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing — have already replaced many common functions of the traditional library. In the 20th century, students could spend hours in “the stacks” trying to track down a needed quote or statistic. With today’s search engines, you should be able to find the information you’re looking for in under 30 seconds. In March 2012, the success of digital search engines forced the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which was founded in 1768, to announce it will cease publishing physical encyclopedias and instead offer only an online version.

2. SMART Boards — SMART Boards look like traditional white boards, but offer the benefits of computer-enhanced interactivity. Anything written on such a board can be saved as a digital file and/or printed out in hard copy. More advanced SMART Boards can project computer-generated images that can be seen throughout a classroom.

3. Lecture Capture — Lecture Capture is the name given to a collection of technologies that allow a teacher’s live presentation to be recorded and digitized along with supporting materials, such as PowerPoint slides, for later viewing. Lecture Capture allows students to spend more time actually listening during class instead of struggling to take notes. More good news: Studies show that Lecture Capture does not significantly reduce actual attendance rates.

4. Digital Textbooks — Textbooks tend to be big, heavy and expensive. They also need to be updated and replaced every few years. Many colleges as well as local school systems already offer some of their texts online. Now, Apple and similar companies are championing 100 percent digital textbooks. In the near future, you could expect to receive tablet computers you can use throughout your education to download, read and store your e-textbooks. The e-books will be designed to allow you to easily highlight passages and take notes. Not only could content be updated instantly, but the new e-textbooks are expected to include interactive functions that are impossible to put in traditional printed texts.

5. Online College Programs — More and more colleges and universities now offer classes — and even entire degree programs — via the Internet. This allows you to earn your degree without having to actually set foot on a college campus. You can set your own schedule and learn at your own pace. In most cases, degrees earned online carry the same value and accreditation as those owned at the school’s ground campus.
