What Is an Applicant Tracking System?

While a non-traditional resumé (infographic or video) may appear unique and eye-catching, there’s a possibility it may limit your chances of landing that dream job. Job recruiters at numerous companies, especially large ones, use an applicant-tracking system (ATS) to phase through the large amount of applications they receive. The applicant tracking system scans for keywords, matching terms and how the two are grouped on a resumé.

This is why submitting a text-based resumé with clear headers and relevant internal copy for the desired position may be the best approach. A resumé header usually contains a person’s name, address, contact information and email address. Internal resumé copy contains information about your work history, an objective, summary of qualifications, academic degrees, and awards or special skills.

Here’s the process.

  1. Human resources receives your resumé.
  2. Your resumé is run through a parser (a process of analyzing text).
  3. Meaning is assigned to its content. Is your resumé relevant to the position applied for?
  4. Keywords and matching terms are grouped together and analyzed. Keywords are important because employers are looking for candidates with specific skills. Matching terms (like software, technical certifications, networking/protocols, programming languages, database applications etc.) imply your scope of experience in a specific area and also add strength to your keywords. In this scenario, your keyword may be the term “computer programmer.” Matching terms and keywords grouped together is what determines the relevancy of your resumé.
  5. Your resumé receives a score based on relevancy. The higher the score, the more likely your resumé will appear at or near the top of the list for search results.
