How to Search for a Job Through LinkedIn

If you're pursing an associate, bachelor's or master's degree, keeping abreast of your competition (other potential job seekers) through smart social networking can be a good way to find a job.

While the ways to land a job in today's fast-paced, high-tech world could be virtually endless, a few tips on leveraging LinkedIn could be useful.

  • Start researching LinkedIn jobs — Click the jobs tab and a number of "jobs you may be interested in" may appear. This is a good start. It means you're already connected somehow to the jobs listed. This can be great for new grads.
  • Focus your job search on specific companies — Targeting companies you'd like to work for can be more effective than waiting for them to find you. This tactic can bring you up to the level of an active job searcher. You may become more effective than the person who simply trolls Careerbuilder.com. You may also be able to find a ton of information on a company, along with information on present or past employees. Contact employees, but don't be surprised if you have to upgrade your LinkedIn account to do so.
  • Use LinkedIn to target specific headhunters — Just make sure a headhunting firm has the capabilities of taking you beyond your own ability to conduct an effective job search. The Internet and social media allow people to connect on an almost infinite level.
  • Network with people you already know on LinkedIn — Friends, relatives, family members and colleagues can be a valuable source of inside information about career opening before they even hit Internet job boards.

If you're enrolled in an online degree program or planning to enroll, landing a job or climbing the ladder of success where you work is bound to be a major goal. The more information you have at your fingertips about today's modern networking landscape, the more effective you'll be in creating a personal branding niche that helps you gain marketable online visibility.
