5 Simple Habits of Successful Online Students

5For some people, going to school is a pleasure, not a chore. Other people struggle with every book they’re assigned to read and every paper they’re asked to write. The differences become even more pronounced for online students. This is because online colleges and universities require students to be more independent and self-motivated than those at traditional ground schools.

If you’re the kind of person who often has trouble performing up to your teachers’ expectations, understand that no one is born an “A” student. Doing well at school takes practice. It takes time and it takes repetition. The good news is that it’s never too late to start.

Here are five habits successful students practice every day. They’re simple, but not necessarily easy. They take effort. Master them, and you may actually find that learning becomes fun.

1. Do the work…now. A student’s No. 1 performance killer is procrastination. Start a project as soon as it is assigned. Not only will the subject be fresh in your mind, but starting early gives you more time to actually do the work — and do it right.

2. Plan ahead. Every day, plan your day out in your head. Figure out what you have to accomplish and the order in which you’re going to do each task. Better yet, write it all out on paper. Do the same thing with your week. Keeping a close eye on your goals helps you avoid surprises and prevent assignments from “falling between the cracks.”

3. Double- and triple-check your work
. Few things are so good they can’t be improved. This is particularly true of first draft school assignments. You not only want to review your work for obvious issues like typos, spelling errors, grammar, etc., but also for content. Do you have your facts right? Can you make a better argument with more content? Or maybe make things clearer through simplification?

4. Get involved. One of the best ways to improve your grades is to make yourself known. Teachers like students who participate in discussions, ask questions and even challenge their lessons. Getting involved is really important if you’re studying online, because you truly are invisible until you speak up.

5. Go beyond your assignments. There are two reasons to earn your college degree online. One is to get the knowledge and background you need to get into the career field you want. The other reason is to learn better ways to learn and think. If you regularly unleash your curiosity and let your desire to discover new things take you where they will, your schoolwork will naturally improve. You will likely also become a more motivated, interesting and even happier person.
