For-Profit Colleges Driving Online Education Industry, Experts Say

For-profit online colleges such as Everest University Online, a division of Everest University, are the driving force behind the growth and improvement in Web-based higher education, according to education specialist Brian Burnsed, writing for U.S. News. In his recent article “Online Education May Transform Higher Ed,” Burnset quotes Louis Soares, director of post-secondary education at the Center for American Progress, who calls online education a “disruptive innovator,” likening it to other transformative technologies and business models that have changed our culture for the better.
“Much in the way cell phones disrupted the traditional landline-based model or discount retailers like Walmart revolutionized the nation’s retail market, the for-profit sector — though a subject of intense scrutiny in recent years — has driven changes that could greatly affect the world of higher education,” Bursen writes. Soares notes that online colleges have not been without their critics, but says, “If you take that for-profit energy out of higher education, online [education] wouldn’t have grown the way it has in the last 10 years.”
According to the article, more and more “traditional” colleges and universities are now adopting the online model pioneered by institutions like Everest University Online. “We’re at the beginning of elite schools starting to take online seriously,” Richard Garrett, managing director at research firm Eduventures says in the U.S. News article. “They’re trying to marry the online experience with the brand of the institution.”
New regulations recently imposed on for-profit schools by the U.S. Department of Education have the potential to improve their positions even further, Garrett states. Strict regulations could “turn for-profits into a more formidable sector” of the education marketplace, he contends.
