Washington Projects Solid Growth for Network Administrators

Network AdministratorIf you’re studying Computer Information Science to become a network administrator, the U.S. government has good news for you. The Department of Labor projects that job opportunities for network administrators will increase a very healthy 23 percent nationwide between 2008 and 2018, the most recent period for which projections are available.

Geography plays a major role in projected job growth. Virginia leads with a projected increase of 39 percent during the 2008-2018 timeframe, followed by Nevada (37 percent), Utah (30 percent), Georgia and Maryland (29 percent each). At the other end of the spectrum, Alaska projects no growth at all in network administrator opportunities, while New York, New Jersey, Arizona, Maine and Montana all project growth in the single digits.*

What Do Network Administrators Do?

Network administrators are key to the health and growth of the complex computer networks that support the operations of most businesses and government agencies. They help ensure that individual computers are able to communicate with each other, that when new computers are added to the network they function properly, and that the network is kept free of viruses, malware, spyware and other contaminants. Network administrators may also add and remove software as necessary and help troubleshoot hardware and software problems.
