5 Ways Online College is Like the Real World

Online LearningThe reason most people go to college — and especially to a career college — is to prepare themselves for life in the “real world.” If this is the case, then earning your degree at an online college or university may reflect what you’ll likely encounter “out there” in several important ways.

Here are five ways online college is like the real world:

1) You’ll be on the computer. A lot. By definition, online college requires you to spend a lot of time on your computer. Once you leave college and go to work, chances are you’ll spend a lot of time on a computer, too. Today’s economy demands people use their minds a lot more than their backs, and that usually involves many hours with your hands on a keyboard and eyes on a screen.

2) You’ll develop online relationships. As an online student, you’ll develop close — perhaps even enduring — relationships with people you will likely never meet in the flesh. This parallels much of the 21st century work experience in which many strong, lost-lasting relationships are forged long-distance via the telephone and Internet.

3) You’ll send a lot of attachments, e-mails and instant messages. Online students communicate with instructors and fellow students mostly through the Internet using electronic documents and communications, which happens to be exactly how most business people communicate today. Online school thus becomes excellent training for real world interactions.

4) You’ll live at home. Online schools don’t have dorms or cafeterias or student lounges. You live at home — whether that means with your parents or in your own home. When you graduate and get a job, your living situation remains unchanged. You may not even have to drive to your new office, since an increasingly number of 21st century jobs allow for telecommuting.

5) You’ll be juggling professional/domestic responsibilities. Traditionally, college is a carefree time when all you have to worry about are your classes and who’s throwing the next party. “Real life” is considerably more demanding, forcing you to efficiently juggle the responsibilities of work and family. Because many people take online classes while already managing a family and/or a job, the experience contains valuable lessons you can take to make your post-graduate life more successful.

Granted, traditional ground schools offer social and recreational opportunities online colleges can’t duplicate. But as practical preparation for how the “real world” operates, virtual schools are arguably more reality-based than are the idyllic environments of conventional college campuses.
