Position Your Resume for Optimal Search Results

Most people aren’t aware of the fact their resume could be blocking them from getting interviews for desired positions. You could be like thousands of other job seekers who complain that their resume apparently falls into a black hole when submitted, and that no one ever seems to look at it.

We’ve all been taught about the importance of submitting an effective cover letter with a resume, which is excellent advice. Unfortunately, many employment websites or employment agencies don’t reveal the fact that resume databases function as a result of “word searches.” In many instances, the cover letter may get stripped from its resume as employers query their database with specific keywords.

Enter the Internet Age

In today’s world, resumes are delivered and loaded electronically into an applicant tracking system (ATS) database. For the most part, when a search occurs, the cover letter isn’t included. It may be time to throw out the old and embrace the new strategy of positioning your resume for optimal search results.

If you submit a resume along with a cover letter online, you can rest assured it will be sent to a database. A headhunter or human resources department receives an order to fill an open position and then queries their database with specific keywords in hope of finding the right candidates to interview.

Better Results May Require New Thinking

You’ll need to start thinking in a different way if you’re looking to beat the odds. Your base resume should paint you as a subject matter expert in your field. If you’re not, it may be time to become one. Load your resume’s job description with the keywords that peg you as an expert who can get the job done.

One size does not fit all! To optimize your resume effectively, write a new resume for each employer of interest. It might consume more of your time, but it may give you an advantage and get your resume to the top of the stack when it comes time for employers to look for qualified candidates.
