Tell Me About Yourself! Ready for the Million-Dollar Question?

Congratulations. You’ve made it to the interview and after shaking hands with the interviewer, he or she says, “Tell me about yourself.”

How will you handle the question? Will you go on and on telling all manner of things about yourself? Or, will you spend the next ten minutes rambling on about the hard work and loyalty you’ve given to past employers. If this is the case, there’s a good chance you might bore the interviewer to tears and create a negative first impression. You may not get a chance for a second interview.

Being asked to tell something about you is actually a common interview question. It’s also one of the questions people are least likely to prepare for. Most people will drop their guard and shift into “rambling” mode. The truth is interviewers aren’t looking for a scientific lecture or a 15-minute dissertation on the 10 most influential technology discoveries of the last 50 years. They are however more than likely looking for a crisp answer that will set the stage for continued discussion.

Here are a few tips that can help get you safely through your interview in one piece.

1. Advance your unique selling proposition (USP). A succinct one-sentence description of who you are and what skills you can bring to the table can make a positive impact and cause your interviewer to give you his or her full attention.

2. Be specific on how you can benefit the employer. It helps if you can put a monetary value on the work you’ve accomplished that saved money for a past employer.

3. Stay Sharp and be prepared with answers. Practice ahead of time. Know your strengths and how they can benefit the employer. This can help separate you from the competition and peak the interviewer’s interest to learn more about you.

Getting an education is a good thing. It can serve as fuel for those inner dreams of success and accomplishment that many of us have. Education is only one step on the ladder of success. A second or third step is securing the interview and making a positive impression that places you another step closer to your goal of being gainfully employed.
