Questions to Ask Your Online College Rep

Online CollegeOnline college can be an excellent option for many people. Studying for a degree online allows a person to keep a current job or attend to family during the day. An online college also eliminates the need for commuting to classes or temporarily relocating should one’s school of choice be in another city. Recent studies have even concluded that students actually learn better online than they do in a traditional classroom environment.*

Despite online learning’s benefits, many people still have serious questions about the experience. How difficult is online college? How does it differ from a traditional school? And what distinguishes one online college from another?

If you are thinking about getting your degree online, here are some questions you want to ask a school’s representative before you enroll:

  • Is this school affiliated with an established ground school, or is it online only?
  • Is your online school accredited? If so, by who?
  • How long has the program I am considering been offered online? How does it differ — if at all — with what your school offers at its ground campus?
  • How many students have completed this online program? On average, how long did it take these students to complete it?
  • Is there any special hardware or software I will need to buy and/or install?
  • If I need help with downloading software and general hardware issues, is there any kind of technical support available? If so, during what hours?
  • What is the maximum number of students in each class at any one time?
  • Will I have any direct interaction with my instructor(s)? If so, how will that be done?
  • Will I have opportunities for interaction with other students? If so, how will that be done?
  • Are online students able to form study groups? How is that done?
  • Will I ever have to visit a ground campus to complete this course, or is it done 100 percent via the Internet?
  • When can I take my courses? Is there an established schedule, or can I truly set my own hours?
  • On average, how many hours per week will I have to devote to my classes?
  • If I have a question or a problem, how long will it take, on average, for me to get a response?
  • What happens after I graduate? Are you able to help me put my new degree to use?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. There are many institutions that offer quality online education and career training programs. With just a little research, you can find one that can give you the education and experience you need to change your life for the better.
