Paralegal Jobs in Local, State and Federal Government

U.S. Department of Justice BuildingAlthough most paralegals work in law firms, many people with paralegal degrees end up working in government agencies. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (2010-2011 Edition), approximately 30 percent of paralegals work outside of law firms — most end up working in local, state or federal government offices.

The agencies that employ the greatest number of paralegals are the U.S. Department of Justice, the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

As with the private sector, government agencies tend to hire paralegals as a matter of economics. Paralegals tend to be far less expensive than professional attorneys, yet are qualified to handle many of the day-to-day responsibilities formerly done by lawyers. These duties can include legal research, preparing and reviewing legal documents, conducting interviews and investigating the facts of a case or claim.

Excellent Benefits

Government salaries for paralegals tend to be competitive with the private sector, but the real attraction for many people is the benefits. Government positions tend to offer excellent health, retirement and vacation plans, and also tend to be more secure than those in the private arena. Most government agencies require as least a Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal studies to apply for an open position.
