Online Education - Questions to Ask Before You Enroll

onlinetextbooks.JPGThere are many questions you need to ask before applying to any college or career training program. It is important to get answers to questions about accreditation, class schedules, financial aid opportunities and job placement services. If you applying to an online college, then the list of questions gets even bigger because of the unique nature of the online learning experience.

If you are thinking about getting your degree online, here are some questions you want to ask a school before you enroll:

• How long has the program I am considering been offered online? How does it differ — if at all — with what your school offers at its ground campus?

• How many students have completed this online program? On average, how long did it take these students to complete it?

• Is there any special hardware or software I will need to buy and/or install?

• If I have problems with any of this hardware/software, is there any kind of technical support available? During what hours?

• What is the maximum number of students in each class at any one time?

• Will I ever have to visit a ground campus to complete this course, or is it done 100 percent via the Internet?

• When can I take my courses? Is there a set schedule, or can I truly set my own hours? On average, how many hours per week will I have to devote to my classes?

• How will I be able to communicate with my professors and fellow students?

• If I have a question or a problem, how long will it take, on average, for me to get a response?

• Are other services available to help me, such as tutoring, academic advising and job services? How do I get in touch with them?

Online education — also called “distance learning” — is still a relatively new industry, so you need to be certain the school you are considering can deliver its services. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and demand satisfactory answers. There are many quality institutions out there offering excellent online education and career training programs. With just a little research, you can find one that will give you the education and experience you need to change your life for the better.
