Write an Effective Resume and Cover Letter

resume_1262876094090.pngA resume can be impressive and written effectively  to match your qualifications and experience.  However, if you don't impress a prospective employer with your cover letter, it's a possibility your resume will never get read. Here are some great tips for writing an effective cover letter and resume:

Be Brief and Get Directly to the Point

A cover letter only has to state the position you're applying for and the accompanying material that is contained within. Your resume should reflect your skills and talents on a single page for best results.

Edit for Mistakes

There's no room for error in this.  A poorly written resume or cover letter with editing or spelling errors can be taken as a sure sign that you don't care enough about the position to be perfect.

Prepare Your Resume and Cover Letter on a Microsoft Word Document

If you don't have access to a computer at home, find a business center or borrow a friend's computer.

Avoid Using Fancy Fonts and Loud Colors

A cover letter is not a creative work of art.  Get in the habit of using plain white paper. Black on white is the standard and is easy to read.  Print the resume and cover letter using a laser printer  to avoid smudges for best results.

Keep Your Cover Letter Short and the Resume Brief

The standard resume length for best results is a single page.  An employer wants to read through as quickly as possible.  Otherwise, it may get tossed into the pile that never gets read.   When ready to mail, place the cover letter and resume in an envelope without folding them.

 Never Plagiarize Other Content

While there are literally thousands of ready-made cover letter templates that can be downloaded from the Internet for both cover letter and resume, it's always best practice to write your story in your own words.

Getting your education is one thing; writing an effective cover letter than can get your resume read is equally important.

Remember, you may not always get a chance to make a positive first-impression the second time around.
