Reading Comprehension Tips for Busy Students

Reading comprehension is extremely important -- especially if you don't have much time to devote to studying.

Here are several ways to improve your reading comprehension:

Read as fast or slow as necessary. Some reading material is tougher than others, so that's why it's important to take the extra time to read textbooks that are difficult. Your comprehension will be much better if you take the time to understand as you read.

Read out loud. Sometimes it helps to read each paragraph out loud. This can help you focus on each word. - and help you understand it better.

Summarize what you've read. After reading for 15 to 20 minutes, take a break to summarize verbally what you've just read. Forcing yourself to summarize will help you think about what you're reading.

Write in your textbook.Highlight, underline and write thoughts in your textbook. Try to summarize major points as you read them.

Take notes.
One great way to help you remember what you've read is to take "summary" notes. These notes will help you remember what you read the next time you skim your textbook. This will come in handy when you prepare for exams.
